Nostalgia often comes second hand, passed down from older generations, leading to a society rooted in a manufactured heritage. This creates places that are symbolically “on a road to nowhere.” The Middle East, in particular, is mythologized and abstract, existing only in the mental maps of outsiders. This abstraction provides comfort to those who remember the past differently, while others dismiss it as “not that bad” and focus on their present lives, forgetting that many historical processes have shifted elsewhere. This relegation of significant events to a distant past is part of a broader effort to disconnect us from historical processes and depoliticize history.
